![]() The waters of “Serenity” provide a calming effect through sight, sound and touch. Water is a universal sign of life itself and its presence symbolizes the fluidity of life. Gently cascading water at the base of the sculpture adds to the peaceful ambiance of the setting. Against a brilliant blue sky, the doves symbolize hope and healing and the sculpture provides inspiration to patients and visitors. “Serenity” is 15-foot-tall bronze sculpture that features 11 white doves on the wing as the centerpiece of a natural and serene setting. ![]() Immanuel Medical Center, in Omaha, Neb., asked artist Matthew Placzek to design a healing garden and the result is “Serenity,” which was created in 2012. Often an artist’s touch is needed to combine all those elements to create an inspirational and peaceful environment. The key to an effective healing garden is to create the perfect blend of nature and serenity in a convenient, comfortable setting. In a study, Roger Ulrich, of Texas A&M University, concluded that surgical patients experienced shorter postoperative stays at hospitals, took less pain medication, and experienced fewer minor post-operative complications because of the calming comfort of a healing garden. Healing gardens are thoughtfully created environments with a variety of sensory experiences and natural elements that help alleviate stress, connect with nature and nurture feelings of safety and comfort.Ī well-crafted healing garden offers a natural setting that evokes positive feelings, reduces negative emotions and stressful thoughts, and diverts the attention of patients and their families to a more pleasant situation. More and more medical facilities are recognizing the important role of healing the mind and spirit along with the body by installing healing gardens to offer a serene spot for patients and their families to relax and renew. Sometimes enlisting the wonders of Mother Nature can help the healing process. While a lot of countries do use these symbols (and indeed the inhabitants of many popular holiday destinations speak English fluently), it never hurts to make an effort.Sometimes it takes more than medicine to get well. ![]() In short, you do probably want to at least carry some kind of phrasebook around with you on your travels. However, is it possible to navigate a foreign country only using these symbols? The Noun Project also supplies a number of additional universal symbols on their site, which are also completely free of charge. ![]() Roger Cook and Don Shanosky are credited as the symbols’ definitive designers, but they can hardly be accused of profiting from their work: the symbols are copyright-free and are now available online for even greater ease of use. A committee formed of five leading designers of environmental graphics oversaw the process, providing recommendations and suggesting and implementing adaptations and redesigns where necessary. The project’s primary aim was to ensure that the signs – and symbols located thereon – were able to convey a variety of potentially complex messages to people of all different ages and cultures in a format that everybody could easily interpret. In 1979, the remaining 16 symbols were released, thus reaching 50. The first 34 of these were published in 1974, and received a prestigious Presidential Design Award -one of the first – for their ingenuity. Working together with the US Department of Transportation, AIGA planned to produce 50 standard symbol signs to be used in transportation hubs such as airports as well as at events with a potential large international attendance. The American Institute of Graphic Arts – more commonly known as AIGA – is credited with being responsible for establishing these (or at the very least cementing the sign designs). These simple silhouettes of a man and a woman are but one of a vast collection of universally recognized symbols that are used all over the world. If you’re in a foreign country and you desperately need to go to the bathroom, what do you do? Fortunately (especially if your reading skills are a little rusty), most signs indicating where toilets are located bear the same iconic symbols seen on toilet doors here in the US in addition to the native name for the facilities. ![]()
